Course Description: Creative Writing Summer Career Camp in London for Ages 15-18

Overview

Unlock your future in writing with Study Mind’s Creative Writing Summer Career Camp. Take part in daily writing workshops, visit the Globe Theatre and join a master class with author Finnian Fitzpatrick. Write, redraft and share real work all week, rather than just listening to talks about writing.

Your first week starts with an introduction to creative writing, then moves through building character through dialogue, script writing and a Writing in the Wild session outdoors, alongside the Globe Theatre visit and the master class. Two-week students add genre writing, short stories, poetry and print, nature writing and writing as industry.

Groups stay small, with no more than 10 students, so mentors like Finnian Fitzpatrick and Dr Julia Bell know everyone’s work. Mornings bring a session or industry visit, and afternoons a hands-on workshop, from script writing to editing and redrafting. You’ll draft, redraft and share your own fiction rather than sit through lectures.

At the heart of the camp, you’ll draft an original short story, share it in a Workshopping Fiction session for peer feedback, then redraft and polish it in the Working and Redrafting workshop before the week ends.

The course is led by Professor and author Finnian Fitzpatrick, who runs the Creative Writing Master Class, and Professor Julia Bell, who teaches a dedicated Creative Writing session in week one. You’ll also have Friday sessions on UCAS applications and personal statements with the Study Mind team.

By the end of the camp, you’ll be able to structure a short story from first draft to a finished piece, write dialogue that reveals character and drives a scene forward, give and receive constructive feedback on a piece of fiction, write short fiction in a genre you have chosen and developed, and draft the opening of a university personal statement with feedback.

The Study Mind Creative Writing Summer Career Camp sends you home with a polished, workshopped piece of short fiction, feedback from author Finnian Fitzpatrick and other mentors, and a working first draft of your personal statement.
