Physics Summer Career Camp in London for Ages 15-18

Course Description: Physics Summer Career Camp in London for Ages 15-18

Overview

Unlock your future in physics with Study Mind’s Physics Summer Career Camp. Build marble rollercoasters, run pendulum experiments and visit Greenwich Observatory with University College London’s Dr Sandro Olivo. This is physics you can see and touch, taught by people who use it every day.

In week one, you’ll cover core physics principles, rollercoaster design exploring energy conservation and friction, astrophysics and the scale of the universe, pendulum experiments with hypothesis testing and data analysis, an introduction to Python for modelling physical systems, and a visit to Greenwich Observatory for celestial mechanics and timekeeping.

Groups stay small, with no more than 10 students, so mentors know each person’s interests. Mornings cover core topics, and afternoons are hands-on: workshops, lab experiments or an industry visit with a physicist. You’ll run experiments and build things yourself, rather than sitting through lectures.

Working in small teams, you’ll design and build a marble rollercoaster from scratch, applying energy conservation, circular motion and friction to keep the marble on track, then test and refine your design.

You’ll be mentored by physics graduates who have recently been through the degree and the admissions process themselves, alongside academics and specialists who work in the field. The teaching team includes Dr Sandro Olivo, a University College London physics expert known for making complex science accessible, who leads the Wednesday session, and Judith C., an accredited UCAS adviser, who works with you on your personal statement and university applications on Fridays.

By the end of the camp, you’ll be able to explain energy conservation using a hands-on rollercoaster build, design and run a pendulum experiment and analyse the data, write simple Python code to simulate projectile motion, describe how the Prime Meridian and celestial mechanics work, and draft a personal statement with specific UCAS guidance.

The Study Mind Physics Summer Career Camp leaves you with a working marble rollercoaster you designed and built, notes from a University College London professor’s session and a stronger UCAS personal statement draft.
