Course Description: Young Professionals Architecture and the Built Environment at d’Overbroeck’s in Oxford, UK

🧭 Overview

Explore the foundations of architecture and design in one of the most inspiring educational cities in the world. This immersive two-week summer program is designed for high school students aged 13–17 with a keen interest in architecture, construction, and the built environment. Hosted at the renowned d’Overbroeck’s school in Oxford, students will engage in practical design exercises, professional workshops, and interactive industry visits while developing their English communication skills and cultural awareness.

🎓 Academic Focus

  • Learn to analyse and design spaces through the lens of history, theory, and contemporary urban contexts.

  • Participate in creative sketching and model-making workshops designed to mirror real-world architectural challenges.

  • Explore sustainable development, urban planning, and the environmental impact of modern construction.

  • Master drawing techniques and gain new perspectives on architecture’s role in shaping society.

📍 Capstone Industry Project

Delivered in collaboration with Class of Your Own, students take part in the Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) learning programme. You’ll:

  • Work on a real-world design challenge based on sustainable construction and urban design.

  • Receive professional mentoring and feedback.

  • Present your final solution and receive a DEC award—an industry-recognised certificate issued by Training Qualifications UK and endorsed by architectural experts.

🏛 Industry Workshops

  • Insider London: A Retail Design Tour through Mayfair to examine flagship stores, high-street evolution, sustainability, and merchandising strategy.

  • Design Museum, London: A curated exploration into the role of contemporary design, material innovation, and sustainability in architecture.

🗺 Cultural Excursions

Enjoy two full-day and one half-day excursions each week. Highlights include:

  • Oxford: Museum of Oxford – Explore Oxford’s historical identity through engaging exhibits.

  • London: Buckingham Palace & Politics Walking Tour – Trace London’s royal and political heritage.

  • Oxford: Christ Church College – Visit one of the most iconic colleges in Oxford.

  • Thames River Boat & Greenwich Royal Museums – Cruise the River Thames and explore the Royal Observatory and Maritime Museum.

  • Cambridge Day Trip – Walk through iconic colleges and enjoy a traditional punting tour.

  • Thorpe Park – Experience thrills at one of the UK’s most exciting amusement parks.
