Course Description: Exceptional Summer Pre-College Mathematics Program for High Schoolers at University College London Campus

London Mathematics Summer School at University College London (UCL)

Discover Logic, Patterns, and the Language of the Universe *

If you love solving problems and enjoy uncovering how numbers explain the world, the London Mathematics Summer School at University College London (UCL) is the perfect place to take your skills to the next level.

Designed for students aged 15–18, this two-week academic programme introduces you to university-level mathematics through interactive lectures, practical workshops, and collaborative problem-solving. You’ll learn how to think like a mathematician, apply logical reasoning, and explore the power of mathematics in real-world contexts — all while living and studying in the heart of London.

***

Academic Overview *

This programme helps ambitious students experience what it’s like to study mathematics at a leading university. You’ll explore the relationship between pure and applied maths, from the abstract world of proofs and algebra to the practical applications of calculus, probability, and statistics.

Through small-group sessions (average of 7 students per class) and one-to-one tutorials, you’ll build confidence in mathematical thinking, strengthen problem-solving skills, and prepare for future study in mathematics, engineering, physics, or computer science.

Total Academic Hours: 30

Format: In-person seminars, tutorials, and project work

Key Learning Areas *

Logic, Proof, and Mathematical Reasoning

Learn how to think rigorously and structure arguments like a true mathematician. Explore propositions, quantifiers, and proof techniques such as induction and contradiction. Develop clarity of thought, precision in writing, and analytical reasoning — key skills for advanced study.

Algebra and Mathematical Structures

Dive into the language of algebra and discover how it models relationships and transformations. Study functions, polynomials, and matrices while exploring symmetry and structure through groups and rings. See how algebra connects with computer science, physics, and cryptography.

Probability and Statistics

Understand how mathematics helps us interpret uncertainty. Study probability theory, distributions, and statistical inference, applying them to real-world cases in finance, science, and decision-making. Strengthen your numerical fluency and ability to reason under uncertainty.

Calculus and Mathematical Analysis

Explore how calculus describes change and motion in the world around us. Learn differentiation and integration techniques while studying limits, continuity, and infinite series. Discover how calculus supports physics, engineering, and data modelling, and prepare for higher-level study.

***

The Personal Project *

Every student completes an independent Personal Project, exploring a mathematical topic of interest — such as the Fibonacci sequence, chaos theory, or applied probability. With support from tutors, you’ll research, present, and reflect on your findings, building confidence and independence in your academic work.

***

Tutors & Mentors 👩‍*

Classes are led by experienced academic tutors who make complex ideas accessible and engaging. Alongside them, university mentors provide friendly guidance, wellbeing support, and practical advice — helping you navigate both your studies and life on campus.

***

Beyond the Classroom *

The experience goes far beyond mathematics. Students take part in a lively programme of social and cultural activities designed to inspire and connect:

🏛 Cultural excursions – Explore London’s museums, galleries, and landmarks.

🎭 Evening events – Join quiz nights, talent shows, and formal dinners in historic halls.

🤝 Global community – Make lifelong friends from around the world.

These shared experiences balance academic challenge with creativity, teamwork, and fun — all in a safe, fully supervised environment.

***

Accommodation & Support *

Students stay in modern university accommodation, either single or twin rooms with en-suite or shared bathrooms. Meals are provided daily, and 24-hour supervision ensures safety, comfort, and peace of mind for all participants.

***

Transfers ✈️

🚌 London Heathrow Shared Transfer Service

  • Arrivals (Sunday): 11:00, 14:00, 17:00

  • Departures (Saturday): 07:00, 12:00

Meet-and-escort service available from all terminals to Terminal 3.

A Transformative Academic Experience *

The London Mathematics Summer School at UCL blends academic challenge, personal growth, and cultural exploration into one unforgettable experience. Students leave with:

  • A deeper understanding of advanced mathematical concepts

  • Improved logical and analytical reasoning skills

  • Confidence in tackling complex problems and proofs

  • Global friendships and exposure to university-level study

This is the perfect programme for curious minds who love numbers, logic, and discovery — and who want to see where mathematics can take them next.
