Lesson Plan

On this program you will explore a side of Hawaii that most will never see as you work to preserve some of the world’s most threatened wildlife. Kānaka Maoli, the idigenous population of Hawaii, had a unique way of dividing and protecting their islands. You will learn about the ahupuaʻa system and how sea life and turtle popuations are impacted by human actions from mountain to sea. Learn all about the majestic honu, Hawaiian for sea turtle, as you help to restore their home and learn from the past to pave the way for future generations.

Community Service

In Hawaii understanding the connection between culture and conservation is the first step to making positive change. You will work alongside local cultural practitioners and environmentalists restoring sea turtle habitats and learning how ecosystem management from mountain to sea impacts the turtle population of this entire state!

Immersive Learning

You’ll hear straight from the experts about issues affecting local populations such as climate change, indigenous land rights, and conservation of endemic species. Visit the National Tropical Botanical Garden, and learn about the preservation and history of plant species important to Hawaii. You’ll also have a chance to see what is believed to be the largest man-made structure in Polynesia. Finally, finish your amazing time in Hawaii with a traditional Polynesian Luau where you will taste some of the most famous dishes of Hawaii and enjoy an evening of dancing and storytelling.
