The Faculty of Medicine Programme is an academically immersive summer course designed for students aged 15–17 who are interested in exploring the science, ethics, and real-world practice of medicine. Set within an Oxford college environment, the programme provides a structured introduction to medical study, combining scientific foundations with practical, hands-on experience.
Rather than focusing solely on theory, the programme introduces students to how medicine operates in real clinical and public health contexts. Students examine how the human body works, how disease develops, and how medical professionals respond to health challenges, while gaining insight into the responsibilities and decision-making required in healthcare careers.
***
Students receive 25 hours of subject-specific academic instruction per week, delivered through interactive seminars, laboratory-style workshops, simulations, and group-based learning led by experienced tutors and medical professionals.
Learning is active, collaborative, and application-focused. Students are encouraged to:
Understand scientific concepts through real medical examples
Apply knowledge in practical and simulated clinical settings
Communicate clearly with patients, peers, and professionals
Work collaboratively as part of a medical team
Develop confidence in problem-solving and decision-making
English is used consistently throughout academic sessions, supporting clear communication in scientific and clinical contexts.
***
Students build a strong grounding in the core sciences that underpin medicine, including:
Human anatomy and physiology
How body systems function and interact
Pathology and how diseases develop
The relationship between structure, function, and illness
This foundation helps students understand the scientific basis of diagnosis and treatment.
Alongside scientific study, students explore the ethical dimensions of medicine, examining:
Patient consent and confidentiality
Professional conduct and responsibility
Allocation of medical resources
Ethical decision-making in healthcare
Through discussion and case studies, students learn how ethical considerations shape medical practice.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through simulated clinical environments. Students practise:
Basic patient assessment
Clear and compassionate communication
First aid and emergency response
Applying knowledge in realistic healthcare scenarios
These sessions are designed to build both competence and confidence while introducing students to clinical thinking.
***
The Summit Experience runs throughout the programme and connects medicine to wider global challenges.
Week One – Health Crisis Response Students take part in a simulated summit where they act as medical advisers responding to urgent health crises. They analyse scenarios such as disease outbreaks or resource shortages and propose evidence-based medical responses.
Week Two – The Interdisciplinary Grand Challenge Medical students collaborate with peers from Business, Law, and Global Leadership to address complex global challenges such as pandemics, climate-related health risks, and ethical issues in healthcare technology. Students contribute medical expertise while working toward integrated, cross-disciplinary solutions.
The experience culminates in the Oxford Global Solutions Forum, where teams present their proposals as if briefing international decision-makers.
***
The academic framework mirrors how real health organisations operate during crises. Students learn how to:
Analyse a health emergency
Design a practical response plan
Balance science, logistics, and communication
Present recommendations clearly to decision-makers
This framework reflects how public health agencies and medical organisations coordinate responses in real-world situations.
***
Every student participates in Time to Shine, a structured communication project focused on explaining medical information clearly and confidently.
Week One: Students design a response plan to a global health emergency, such as a vaccination campaign, clean water initiative, or medical supply distribution strategy. They present the scientific reasoning behind their plan and outline how it would be implemented.
Week Two: Students refine and present their ideas as part of the interdisciplinary challenge, acting as health advisers briefing world leaders. Emphasis is placed on translating complex science into clear, accessible language.
The final showcase highlights students’ ability to combine scientific accuracy with confident communication.
***
Students take part in guided fieldwork, observing how health and safety principles are applied in everyday environments. Activities may include:
Examining hygiene and infection-prevention measures
Observing food safety and public health practices
Linking local observations to global public health strategies
This reinforces how medical thinking extends beyond hospitals into everyday life.
***
No prior medical knowledge is required. The programme is designed to be accessible to students from all academic backgrounds, with:
Step-by-step introduction of key scientific and medical concepts
Clear explanations of terminology
Continuous tutor guidance and feedback
The emphasis is on curiosity, participation, and teamwork, helping students grow in confidence throughout the programme.
***
This programme is ideal for students who:
Are curious about medicine, healthcare, and human biology
Want hands-on experience before pursuing medical studies
Enjoy problem-solving and teamwork
Are considering future careers in medicine, healthcare, biomedical science, or public health
Students exploring medicine for the first time are equally welcome.
***
By the end of the programme, students will have:
A strong understanding of the scientific foundations of medicine
Insight into medical ethics and professional responsibility
Experience practising basic clinical and communication skills
Confidence working collaboratively in medical teams
Greater clarity about future study and careers in healthcare
