Embark on a transformative journey with the Dartmouth Summer Scholars Program, where students delve into the vital realm of environmental sustainability. Course Description

Learning Outcomes:

• Calculate and interpret personal carbon footprints, comparing them with global averages.

• Record and analyze air quality and emissions data.

• Debate ethical dilemmas using philosophical and psychological frameworks.

• Summarize case studies on climate ethics and inequality.

• Understand global and national policy frameworks for decarbonization.

• Identify barriers to effective climate action and strategies for resilience.

Hands-on Activities:

• Engage in lab work and produce lab reports.

• Collaborate in teams to develop actionable plans for local and regional sustainability.

• Participate in field trips to the Cold Regions Research Engineering Laboratory and other significant sites.

• Attend lectures from esteemed guest speakers, such as Dr. Justin Mankin and Dr. Maron Greenleaf.

Tangible Outcomes:

• Design and present an individual or group decarbonization strategy integrating science, ethics, economics, and policy.

• Develop a written plan (5 pages) with data, analysis, and reflection.

• Deliver an oral or visual presentation, such as a poster, slideshow, or short video.

Passionate about environmental sustainability? This program is your gateway to success. Admission requires a recommended GPA of 3.5 or above in a related field and the completion of the Summer Institute application, including thoughtful responses to short-answer questions.

If your home country is not one of the 40 countries in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, you will need a B-2 Visitor Visa to attend the program.

The B-2 visa is for tourism and short-term study (under 16–18 hours of classes per week).

After enrollment, you will receive a Letter of Introduction to help support your visa application.
