Course Description: Oxford Medicine Online Summer Course

Through live, interactive tutorials (not pre-recorded), you will explore common health conditions, learn about diverse medical specialisms like cardiology and psychiatry, and examine the future of healthcare. Guided by expert tutors from leading universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, you will discover the workings of the human body, meet real patients, and understand the clinical reasoning required to diagnose and treat diseases.

Course Content & Learning Objectives

1. The Medical Landscape

  • Get to know your international cohort and tutor, establish course norms, and understand the overall academic task for the programme.

  • Core Concepts: Review basic medical concepts and key terminology. Discuss the structure of the NHS and explore current "hot topics" in global medicine.

  • Study the detailed anatomy of the lungs and the physiological processes involved in the respiratory system.

  • Diagnosis: Learn to identify respiratory pathologies and understand the preventative measures used to manage lung health.

5. Debate Medical Ethics

  • Consider the fundamental question: "What are medical ethics?" Participate in a formal debate on common ethical dilemmas in medicine.

  • Integrity: Recognise the importance of maintaining professional integrity and navigating the complex legal frameworks of clinical practice.

6. The Brain, Mind & Nervous System

  • Put your skills to the final test by taking part in a full patient consultation.

  • Feedback: Take a full history, present your findings to the tutor and peers, and receive constructive feedback on your clinical communication and diagnostic reasoning.

Dr Rory Maples BA Hons, MBBS, MSc (Oxon)

Rory is a practising doctor, specialising in general surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and is currently studying towards a Master of Science in Digital Health at Lincoln College, University of Oxford. Rory is particularly interested in the intersection of medicine, technology, and humanitarianism, and has extensive experience teaching medical students in both Australia and Oxford.
