Course Content & Learning Objectives

1. Introduction to Architecture

• Historical Context: Explore different architectural styles and movements from ancient civilisations to the modern era.

• The Hands-on Design Project: Receive an introduction to your design project, familiarising yourself with the design brief and constraints.

2. The Design Process

• Explore the steps involved in conceptualising and developing architectural designs.

• Learn essential sketching and drafting techniques used by architects to communicate ideas, alongside an introduction to model making.

3. Elements of Design

• Understand the core elements of design—line, shape, form, space, texture, and colour—and their application in architecture.

• Examine the principles of design, such as balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity, to create compelling compositions.

4. Architectural Styles

• Examine major architectural styles throughout history, including ancient, medieval, and modern architecture, with examples of iconic structures.

• Explore how regional and cultural factors, traditions, materials, and climate shape architectural designs globally.

5. Building Materials and Systems

• Learn about common building materials and their structural, aesthetic, and functional properties.

Meet Your Tutor 👩‍🏫

Tarjani Samani BSc, MSc

Tarjani is an architect and writer from Mumbai. She holds a Master of Science in Design Research from Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, in collaboration with Humboldt University Berlin. Her research explored how emerging practices create inclusive spatial dialogues. A recipient of a German government scholarship for outstanding research, Tarjani leads innovative teaching modules and contributes to various reputed architectural publications.
