The Medicine Career Insights Programme is an academically intensive introduction designed for students aged 15–18 who are interested in studying medicine, biomedical science, or health-related disciplines at university. Medicine is explored as a field at the intersection of science, ethics, research, and clinical reasoning, providing students with a realistic understanding of how modern medicine is studied and practised.
Set in London, a global centre for medical research and education, the programme prepares students for advanced academic study by introducing university-level concepts, analytical methods, and research-based thinking used in medical sciences.
***
The programme is delivered through thematic academic sessions, combining:
Theory-based teaching, introducing advanced scientific concepts similar to undergraduate study
Applied and discussion-based sessions, encouraging students to analyse case studies, research questions, and real-world medical challenges
Students are supported through structured guidance, personalised feedback, and small-group teaching, ensuring academic challenge alongside individual progression.
***
Students begin by exploring medicine as a scientific and academic discipline. This module examines:
Human biology at cellular and systemic levels
How diseases develop and progress
The role of scientific research in advancing healthcare
Students gain an understanding of how medical knowledge is generated, evaluated, and applied in clinical practice.
***
This module introduces the structure and function of the human body at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. Students explore:
Organ systems and tissue organisation
Structure–function relationships
Guided dissection or microscopy to examine real biological examples
The module establishes anatomy as a cornerstone of medical education and research.
***
Students explore the molecular mechanisms that control life and influence health, including:
DNA replication and gene expression
Genetic mutations and their effects on cellular function
The role of genetics in precision medicine and diagnostics
Emphasis is placed on how molecular discoveries translate into improved diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
***
This module examines how the brain and nervous system function, focusing on:
Neural signalling and sensory processing
Cognitive function and behaviour
Neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy
Students explore how neuroscience research informs treatments for mental and neurological health conditions.
***
Students investigate how genetic information determines health and disease. Topics include:
DNA structure and inheritance
Genetic mutations and inherited disorders
Modern genomic techniques such as CRISPR and genetic screening
Ethical considerations surrounding genetic medicine are explored alongside scientific advances.
***
This module introduces how medicines interact with the body at molecular and physiological levels. Students examine:
Drug mechanisms of action
Drug development and clinical testing
Regulation of medicines and patient safety
Global challenges such as antibiotic resistance
Students gain insight into translational medicine, bridging laboratory research and patient care.
***
Students explore how scientific discoveries progress from research laboratories to clinical application. Topics include:
Hypothesis development and experimental design
Clinical trials and research ethics
Breakthroughs in regenerative medicine, biotechnology, and immunology
This module highlights the importance of scientific method and collaboration in improving patient outcomes.
***
A core component of the programme is the Personal Project, an individual research-focused assignment allowing students to:
Explore a medical topic of personal interest in greater depth
Apply theoretical knowledge and original thinking
Present findings through an essay, presentation, report, or creative format
Students develop their project throughout the programme with tutor guidance and present their work at the end. Written academic feedback is provided after completion.
***
Some tutors may provide preparatory work before the programme begins, such as reading, pre-research, or short exercises. These tasks help students:
Establish a shared academic foundation
Engage confidently in higher-level discussion
Maximise learning from the programme
Preparatory materials are designed to support confidence and readiness.
***
This programme is ideal for students who:
Are interested in medicine, biomedical science, or healthcare
Enjoy biology, scientific reasoning, and research-based learning
Are considering medical school or related university pathways
Want early exposure to university-style medical education
No prior medical experience is required.
***
By the end of the programme, students will have:
A strong academic foundation in medical science
Experience with university-style teaching and assessment
Enhanced critical thinking, research, and communication skills
A completed Personal Project suitable for future academic portfolios
Greater confidence in pursuing medicine or health-related degrees
