Finance Curriculum

Facilitated by instructors with decades of experience on Wall Street, this 14-day immersive program equips high school students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a degree in business or finance.

Students will be introduced to the complex world of finance, providing an invaluable foundation in business and capital markets. Gain hands-on skills and life-long connections through group projects and weekly competitions judged by a panel of industry experts.

Fund Manager Competition

After learning the guidelines and best practices for researching and evaluating a stock from a professional portfolio manager, students will be grouped into small teams and will assume the role of equity analysts researching and selecting stocks to develop a winning portfolio. Each team will:

• Pre-screen around 10 companies' stocks.

• Evaluate each company in detail.

• Develop a portfolio of up to 3 stocks.

• Present findings and recommendations as a portfolio pitch to NYIF experts and the group.

Model Equity Portfolio Competition

After learning about trend recognition in real-time trading and analyzing equities from a technical perspective, students will be grouped into small teams and will construct a portfolio using technical indicators and analysis. Each team will:

• Evaluate momentum, trend, volume and market-sentiment based indicators.

• Construct a model equity portfolio with maximum technical potential.

• Present findings, techniques and analysis to NYIF experts and the group.

Gain industry insights and inspiration by meeting with a wealth manager, trader, venture capitalist, financial advisor or performance coach.

A 25-year veteran of Wall Street, he spent 14 years in sales and marketing at Bloomberg in a variety of leadership positions, he was director of business development at BlackRock Solutions and was a managing director at Citadel. Chuck is also a mountaineer and has climbed mountains on four continents. Chuck received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Syracuse University and his master’s in organizational leadership from Mercy College.

• Michael CarrNew York Institute of Finance Instructor Michael CarrNew York Institute of Finance InstructorMichael Carr is an American investor who has earned both the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) and Certified Financial Technician (CFTe) designations. He has deep expertise in market and technical analysis. Mike is currently the Chief Quantitative Strategist at TradeSmith, a division of MarketWise. Previously, he wrote technical-analysis-based newsletters with a focus on seasonal trends and relative strength. Prior to that, Mike managed over US $220 million in professional investment accounts and co-managed two mutual funds. He has appeared as a speaker at major industry events such as Money Show Las Vegas and Trader Tech West. Michael holds an MBA from Webster University and a BSc in Chemistry from Wilkes University. As a Senior Managing Director at Forefront Capital, Chris headed client development and was involved in product development and deal origination. He also was a Senior Vice President and head of U.S. alternative investment product distribution for Lehman Brothers; a Director at Bank of America; and a Regional Sales Manager at Merrill Lynch. Chris received a BA, Political Science from New York University and a master’s in International Affairs, International Banking and Finance from Columbia University.

• Mayra Rodríguez ValladaresNew York Institute of Finance Instructor Mayra Rodríguez ValladaresNew York Institute of Finance InstructorMayra Rodríguez Valladares is a bank and capital markets risk consultant and trainer. Her consulting projects have included banks, financial regulators, central banks, securities firms, and insurance companies. Ms. Rodríguez Valladares has written business plans and created financial models for a wide range of companies and has analyzed financial firms’ financial models and stress tests. Ms. Rodríguez Valladares has been an Adjunct Professor at New York University where she has taught courses on globalization and energy. She was also an Adjunct Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she taught global marketing, corporate finance, and Latin American Politics.

Flight to New York

As a participant on our Wall Street program, you may fly to New York City and be greeted upon arrival and enjoy complimentary transfer (for flights in designated times) from the airport to our hotel. For those requiring, we are happy to assist you with arranging flights to and from the program. If you prefer, you may be dropped off directly at our hotel and meet your staff there.

Return Flight Home from New York

For your return from New York for flights in designated times, we provide airport transfer and our leaders help you to check in and remain in the airport until flights have departed.

Food & Meals

A big part of your summer program’s success depends on how well you eat. We are proud of the fact that year after year we are complimented for our quality, quantity and choice of food! Enjoy a delicious breakfast with a healthy variety of hot and cold choices. For lunch, you enjoy the choice of eating in smaller groups and choosing from local cafés and small restaurants. For dinner, either the whole group goes to the same restaurant or we divide into smaller groups to sample quainter places with a variety of cuisines. Food options are varied and plentiful.

We have satisfied the choosiest of eaters and gladly accommodate most special dietary requests including vegetarian, food allergies, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, and kosher style. We welcome discussing your individual requirements with you and have extensive experience in this area.

Laundry

You will only need one week’s worth of clothing as outlined in the packing list that will be sent to you prior to departure. You’ll have the opportunity to do laundry at a local wash-and-fold service, where you can drop off your clothes and pick them up clean, folded, and ready to go.
