Griffith Park/Observatory

  • Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of L.A. and the iconic Hollywood sign from the Griffith Observatory. Hike portions of the Mt. Hollywood Trail to explore the local vegetation and see even more unique angles of the city.

Ovation Hollywood

  • Formerly known as Hollywood and Highland (being the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue), explore the iconic shopping center and entertainment complex in the Hollywood district of L.A. Don't forget to get a picture of your favorite celebrity's star on the Walk of Fame before we leave!

Beverly Gardens Park & Rodeo Drive

  • Walk the stretch of Beverly Gardens Park, featuring the iconic "Beverly Hills" sign featured in many movies, followed by a stroll down Rodeo Drive - known for its status as one of the most prestigious retail destinations in California.

Santa Monica Pier & Sunset

  • Nothing beats a California sunset, and what better place to take that in than at the Santa Monica Pier and beach. Students will have the opportunity to spend time on the beach and explore the Santa Monica Pier - which offers a full-service amusement park and a variety of souvenir shops, street vendors, and more. Before we leave, we'll stay to experience a quintessential west coast sunset.

The Grove & Farmers Market

  • Explore a mix of retail, restaurants, and entertainment in an open-air environment, known to be frequented by celebrities. The Farmers Market - located on the same grounds - is home to more than 100 shops, grocers, and eateries in an al-fresco setting.

Amusement Park

  • Students will get either a half-day or whole-day of fun at an area amusement park! In the past, we've visited Six Flags and Knott's Berry Farm.

Track-Specific Excursions

  • Each academic program may also take subject matter specific excursions to help round out the student experience.

Activities

At UCLA, students share a traditional dorm room with another person - in some cases two people, although not common. Students are housed by gender, and genders are separated by floor. Each floor shares a communal bathroom, but there are private shower and toilet stalls in the bathrooms. Dorm rooms contain a Twin XL sized bed, desks, drawers, mirror, and a closet. Basic linens are provided in the form of a fitted sheet, flat sheet, towel, and pillowcase.

Summer Springboard staff, in the form of Resident Advisors (RAs), live on each floor to create a community, provide support, plan activities, and help students get the most out of their stay at UCLA. Other members of the Summer Springboard staff also live on campus and are available to support students and address emergencies, 24 hours a day.

Meals

Most meals will be in the on-campus dining hall. The dining hall offers a wide selection of food, accommodating a variety of diets - including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal, and specific food allergies. In the past, we've eaten in the De Neve dining hall, and you can reference their daily menu here to get a sense of what to expect.

Pocket Money

You may want to think about bringing some extra cash with you to Summer Springboard. We will be touring the local area and eating a few meals (maybe lunch, dinner on the weekends out). While you tuition covers the cost of the excursion, it will not cover any souvenirs you may want to pick up for family and friends. We suggest an extra $100.

Lesson Plan

If there is anything we’ve been reminded of these past few years, it’s how essential a role our emergency care doctors, nurses, first responders, and other healthcare professionals play in society, and how necessary they are. The average emergency room nurse makes between $77,000 and $107,000, with top earners making $124,500 annually. Whether your goal is to become an EMT or paramedic, an emergency room doctor, an ICU nurse, or any other profession that utilizes emergency care skills, Summer Springboard course in Emergency Medicine on the campus of UCLA will immerse you in a variety of foundational skills and knowledge. Our course will prepare you for a future career in emergency care, and expose you to the healthcare field overall and the various paths you can pursue. Students will learn a variety of skills and techniques, ranging from basic first aid to triaging emergency situations and wounds, through a variety of hands-on activities and practical simulations. Skills and techniques explored include positioning and extraction, wound care, bleeding control, stitches and sutures, usage of splints and slings, and other life-saving skills. Students will have the opportunity to research a simulated patients history and symptoms, create a diagnosis based on their findings, and develop a treatment plan. Ultimately, students will be able to apply the knowledge they’ve learned from the course through a simulated mass-disaster scenario. This simulation will teach students how to respond to a patient just like a medical professional, assessing information and applying their medical knowledge in high pressure environments.

Program Highlights

  • Learn a variety of practical skills such as taking vitals, placing a splint, basic first aid, suturing, stopping a bleed, performing CPR.
  • Immerse yourself in the hospital setting and medical simulation lab, where you'll be able to apply your knowledge in mock scenarios, and observe where healthcare students and faculty hone and refine their life-saving skills
  • Gain valuable insight into diverse educational and career opportunities in medicine and healthcare.
  • Work in teams to research, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan for simulated patients.
  • Apply your newfound knowledge by participating in a mock disaster scenario where you'll have to triage and care for simulated injured patients.

Topics you'll explore

Course Structure:

Hands-On Learning

  • Learn basic medical skills and get training on how to handle situations when medical care is not immediately available. Simulations will allow students to learn and practice hands-on medical techniques including positioning and extraction, wound care, control of bleeding, stitches and sutures, usage of splints and slings, and other useful potentially life-saving skills. In small groups, students in a simulated medical team will be required to research the patient’s history and symptoms, create a diagnosis based on their findings, and develop a treatment plan.

Career Exploration

  • Throughout the program, meet a variety of experts in the field of healthcare that will provide advice and tips on academic preparation and professional pathways to explore. We will discuss the wide variety of professions within the medical field, such as physical therapy, physician's assistants, phlebotomy and more. Students will get a deeper sense of their unique motivations and aptitudes and how that aligns with potential academic and career choices. This helps students make better informed decisions about some of life’s most important choices.
