Location

Located in the delightful South Downs, 20 minutes outside of Brighton, Plumpton College is an agricultural boarding school in the picturesque English countryside.

Plumpton College has a fully-functional animal farm, horse riding stables and an animal care centre, where students learn about animal management.

Plumpton is surrounded by acres of open space, sports fields and awe-inspiring views of the surrounding South Downs hillside.

Activities

Every Bucksmore Education programme offering is carefully designed to provide fun and educational excursions that allow students to further their studies outside of the classroom. Whether this may be a ride on the London Eye taking in the spectacular sights of Central London, a private tour of various Cambridge or Oxford Universities, or a coordinated sports session on site, our social programme will engage and absorb students into British culture and heritage, guarantee long-lasting friendships and offer plentiful opportunities for students to improve their English in real-life settings. The excursions will promote communication skills for the students, testing their English language skills with each other and with members of the public.

Accommodations

At Plumpton, bedrooms are located on the ground and first floor of the main building, Classrooms and the dining hall are also situated on the ground floor. Students are divided into separate male and female hallways, and all bedrooms are either single or twin rooms. Bathrooms are shared between 4-6 students.

Pocket Money

We suggest students bring no more than £150 per week in spending money. The only things students will need to spend money on are souvenirs or snacks, everything else they may need is included in the course fee!

Transportation

Bucksmore offers a free airport transfer service for all students at Plumpton arriving and/or departing between 10:00-20:00 at:

  • London Heathrow (LHR)

  • London Gatwick (LGW)

Students requesting private transfers outside of these destinations and times will be subject to additional charges.

Course Overview

This programme is for students who want to learn about animal husbandry, handling and welfare. Learners build knowledge and confidence around various animals ranging from small mammals (rabbits, guinea pigs and mice), domesticated livestock (goats, donkeys, sheep and alpacas), and exotic species (reptiles, amphibians and tortoises). The course usually starts with small mammals then builds upon these skills as the learner’s progress onto the more challenging animals. Each learner will complete a workbook and receive a certificate of completion at the end of their course.

Sample Lessons

**Day 1 **

Centre Induction: Health and safety talk, tour of Centre and presentation of appropriate behaviour around the animals and wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). **Cleaning and feeding of rodents: **students remove old food and water and then provide fresh food water. Spot cleaning - sweeping of soiled sawdust, wiping of enrichment toys and replacement of hay in hay balls. **Practical animal handling: **students are taught how to handle a rabbit or guinea pig and undertake a health check.

Day 2

**Cleaning and feeding of reptiles: **Students remove old food and water and then provide fresh food water. Students also provide fresh peat and sand. **Practical animal handling: **students are taught how to handle a gecko or snake and undertake a health check.

Day 3

**Cleaning and feeding of amphibians: **Students remove old food and water and then provide fresh food and water. **Practical animal handling: **Students are taught how to handle frogs and toads and undertake a health check.

Day 4

**Cleaning and feeding of invertebrate and specimen species: **students remove old food and water and then provide fresh food water. **Practical animal handling: **Walking and bathing the ferrets.
