Course Aims

This course aims to efficiently improve English language skills and enable students to make friends from around the world.

Electives

Students sign up for a choice of vocational subjects to enhance their English language learning, such as photography, creative writing and IELTS Preparation._ Please note – exact subjects depend on location._

Academic Skills Sessions

The academic skills sessions give students an introduction to exam techniques and are intended to help students improve the skills of academic reading, writing, listening and speaking. These sessions take place over three hours each week and culminate with students taking the Bucksmore Assessment.

Link Lessons

To provide students with an even greater holistic language learning experience, we provide lessons specifically linked to the destinations they visit on their excursions.

Projects

Project sessions enable students to use English for the completion of real-world tasks with an authentic purpose. Students receive vocabulary and grammar input in the first part of the project session and are then placed into groups. Groups are provided with a project guideline which they should follow and aim to complete in the preparation session. The weekly project culminates in a presentation evening in which groups display and present their work.

Assessment

Taken at the end of the course, the assessment is designed to complement the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) and to provide learners with a realistic determination of their English ability. It can be applied against other international English exams such as Cambridge ESOL & IELTS. Students will leave the course with a certificate of recommended English level measured against the CEFR scale.

The Assessment was initially introduced in 2016 after thorough research and analysis of student English language performance.

Uniquely developed by the academic team to evaluate all abilities in English. It assesses a learner’s skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening and provides a well-rounded assessment of a student’s English ability.

The Assessment provides more relevant and appropriate language so learners are motivated to perform better than other, more adult-focused, exams.

All students receive a personalised Education report card and certificate during the graduation ceremony at the end of their stay.

Activities & Excursions

The social programme is an important part of any summer school experience and is great way for students to socialise and practise their English with each other. Organised by a dedicated Activity Manager, each week students will have two full day excursions to destinations across the UK, plus an on-site activity programme.

WELFARE

Every location has a residential management team, and a minimum staff-student ratio of 1:7. There is always a trained first aider on-site, and students are supervised 24 hours a day.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS

Camp offers a complimentary airport transfer service on transfer days for flights arriving/departing between 10:00 and 20:00. We can also provide an Unaccompanied Minor service for pick-up and drop-off. Students are looked after from when they land to when their flight departs.

STAFF

Each location has a Centre Manager, Activity Manager and Director of Studies available for all students to approach with any problems. Counsellors are more than just teachers; they provide a high level of care and guidance for all students. All staff are background checked.

PASTORAL CARE

High staff to student ratios ensure all students are looked after. Bucksmore summer schools strive to create a warm and welcoming “family atmosphere” where all students and Counsellors know each other well.
