Our Career Insights accommodation, Astor College, is an award-winning dynamic facility which is also linked to University College London (UCL). This is the ideal place to stay if it excites you to be surrounded by world-leading education institutions.
Just a four-minute walk from Goodge Street Underground Station, and a twelve-minute walk from The British Museum, The British Library and Russell Square, the accommodation is perfectly located for social and cultural activities.
Participants stay in comfortable single, en-suite bedrooms with access to common rooms and social spaces with pool tables and quiet study areas, perfect for downtime.
Meals
Breakfast and dinner are provided in our accommodation by catering teams that provide meals for university students during term time. The staff are well accustomed to a variety of dietary requirements and will be happy to advise which foods are appropriate for you.
If you have a food allergy, we request that you speak to staff at mealtimes to confirm allergens as an additional precautionary measure, though your dietary information is shared with the catering teams in advance of your arrival.
Participants should arrive between 2 pm and 5 pm on the first Sunday of the programme. Our team will be ready and waiting to welcome you, register you, and show you to your accommodation. Please note that your accommodation may not be ready until 3pm.
If you are arriving at London Heathrow Airport, we are able to offer a shared airport transfer service. This is a chaperoned service departing from London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 and travelling directly to the colleges in Cambridge/Oxford. Do not worry if you will be arriving to any other Heathrow terminal - our dedicated pastoral team will be there to meet you and escort to Terminal 3 for departure to your college
The transfers depart at 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00 on the Sunday of arrivals. On the final Saturday of the programme, the transfers to London Heathrow Airport depart at 07:00 and 12:00. This will be available to book for a fee per journey after enrolment.
Specific details, such as contact numbers, are shared with participants nearer the time of the programme.

You will explore concepts and share ideas in small groups of like-minded and ambitious peers from around the world. In classes averaging 7 students, you will be guided by expert project leads who offer an insight into their industry. Our rigorous vetting process guarantees that all participants are taught by engaging and supportive educators who are, most of all, enthusiastic about sharing their expertise to ensure our summer school teaching is of the highest quality.
Theory and Research: This introductory module introduces key concepts in the fields of engineering. You will examine real-world data, recent developments in the industry and innovative case studies across civil, mechanical, sustainable and aerospace engineering. You will learn how to use your data and research in product development, and practise presenting your insights in a professional setting.
**Practical Experience: **Exposure to the industry brings future careers to life. Workshops may include a session with the Dyson Institute, a robotics master class with the School of Coding plus visits to industry heavyweights like Jaguar Land Rover or Transport for London. You'll get to see for yourself the engineering innovators that are changing the face of the industry.
Real-World Project: As part of the engineering programme, your job is to offer an innovative solution to improve transport around London. You’ll begin by examining the problem and speaking to those it most impacts, for example meeting with Transport for London and London Assembly. You’ll investigate existing solutions and work on product development, taking into account available technology, budget and timeframe. The programme culminates in an opportunity to pitch your product or service to industry professionals.
Professional Development: Bridging the gap between education and the world of work, this module offers an insight into existing and emerging careers in engineering. These sessions are made up of guest lectures and expert panel discussions with speakers from world-famous institutions like MIT, Stanford University and the University of Cambridge, and experience at leading companies like Airbus, Siemens and Rolls-Royce.
