Course Description: Pioneering Explorer English Plus Activity Program for Teenagers on St. Albans School Campus near London

Bell St Albans is located in the village of London Colney. It’s housed in an elegant Victorian building, within 60 acres of beautiful English countryside providing a safe and peaceful environment. The main building - for living, teaching, learning and social events - is set around a traditional courtyard garden. Students live and learn in our safe and secure schools.

This is the best year around on campus accommodation English Language camp at St Albans. The program is so vibrant and themed based with wonderful excursions.

Course description

Summer explorer takes place weekly at Bell St Albans, and it caters for students aged 11 to 17. On arrival, students are tested to make sure they are placed in a group that suits their ability. Students learn though their lessons, activities, and cultural visits. Please see below the course structure:

 

Project-based lessons: 15 hours per week

Lessons focus on a project to suit the level and age range of the class. Students learn something new every time.

 

Afternoon Activities:  9 hours per week

Upon arrival on campus, students choose two electives per week. A selection of active, academic, and creative electives will be available each week. Examples include:

 

  • Art and Crafts

  • British Literature

  • Cricket

  • Dance

  • Dodgeball

  • Drama

  • Film and photography

  • Football

  • Handball

  • Health and fitness

  • Journalism

  • Lacrosse

  • Music

  • Orienteering

  • Rounders

  • Volleyball

 

Study tours (included in the course) - 1 per week (3 every two weeks)

Students will learn about British life and culture by exploring places of interest.

Each course includes a study tour to London - students may go on a walking tour or river cruise, or visit places such as Madame Tussauds, the London Science Museum, or the Tower of London.

Students who stay at least two weeks, will enjoy another study tour to places such as Cambridge, Warwick Castle, and Oxford.

 

Evening Activities: 9 hours per week

After lessons, afternoon electives and a delicious dinner, students have an evening activity – more chance for your child to learn and practice English! Examples of evening activities include team-building challenges, treasure hunts and film nights.

The package includes:

  • Project-based lessons, two electives, a range of activities and study tours

  • Comprehensive supervision by qualified and experienced staff

  • Return transfers on scheduled arrival and departure days from and to Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports and St Pancras Eurostar Station (for arrivals & departures between 07:00 – 19:00)

On this course, students will:

  • Gain confidence and become more independent learners and users of the English language

  • Develop their English language skills (reading writing, listening, and speaking)

  • Essential 21st century life skills (communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and cultural awareness)

  • Produce a portfolio of work to demonstrate progress and achievements

  • Meet new friends from across the world

Accommodation

Accommodation blocks are separate for boys and girls. Bedrooms are shared and can accommodate between two and four students. Where possible, we mix nationalities in bedrooms, so students are encouraged to practice their English and learn more about another culture.

Access to bathrooms are also separate for boys and girls, as well as for junior and senior courses. There are shared showers and toilet facilities, which are situated at convenient points throughout the accommodation.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are cleaned regularly, with fresh bed linen provided weekly. Students are responsible for making sure their room is tidy and will have regular room inspections. There is a free laundry service for machine washable clothes once a week.

To ensure the highest level of safeguarding, there is a dedicated houseparent for each accommodation block, who is responsible for the care and welfare of students outside of the classroom.

All students will attend a daily house meeting led by their houseparent where they will have the opportunity to discuss what they have achieved and share any concerns.

Meals

Students are offered a choice of nutritious food at each mealtime; breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every menu includes a selection of hot and cold items including fresh fruit and vegetables. Packed lunches are provided on study tours.

Snacks are available during break times and at each evening house meeting. If your child has a dietary requirement associated to an allergy, please let us know so we can accommodate this**.**

Curfew

Lights are switched off between 22:30 and 23:00. Students are not allowed outside the school site without supervision.

Activities

The activity programme is an integral part of the course and allows students to practise what they have learnt and develop a natural, fluent use of the language. Our afternoon activities – electives and Academy options – are designed to improve communication and confidence while developing academic, creative and active skills. All Summer Explorer students will also enjoy a wide variety of whole-school activities, such as games, competitions, discos and shows.

Excursions

There is no better way to learn about British life and culture than to experience it for yourself.  Study tours also play an important role in our learning approach. Students prepare for their study tour in class and have educational tasks to complete during their trip, this is then discussed in lessons afterwards. They will have three-full day study tours to UK destinations, every two weeks. Students will also have the opportunity to add optional activities to enhance their experience. Enjoy study tours to exciting attractions like:

  • Windsor Castle
  • Warwick Castle
  • Madame Tussauds Museum
  • Punting in Cambridge

Transportation

  • Care starts upon your child's UK arrival, managed by our Young Learners team for coordination and supervision on arrival and departure days.

  • Travel with your child directly to the school is an option, and we can arrange this.

  • Airport or station transfers, included in your package, operate from designated airports within scheduled times.

  • Free transfers available between 10 am and 5 pm, depending on student travel requirements.

  • Notify changes to departure dates at least 7 working days before your departure.

Lesson Plan

Explorer focuses on developing core English language skills through project-based learning activities and interactive learning – an effective way to learn language quickly and successfully.We encourage students to become more confident, independent learners while they develop 21st century life skills that will benefit their future learning, life and work.

On this course, students will:

Project-based learning

Project themes have been intentionally designed for students and teachers to take their project in a direction that best meets the group’s needs and motivations. This means that every group of students will learn something different and each student receives a personalised learning experience. Each theme will have a central guiding question that focuses the project and students work collaboratively towards the production of a tangible project outcome. This approach helps students learning faster and more successfully. It also guarantees that students will learn something new every time.

Students choose 2 electives per week. Sample electives include:
