Veterinary Experience Workshops

Students work with a variety of creatures such as birds, reptiles, rodents, amphibia and invertebrates. Students are taught by both year-round Plumpton staff and Bucksmore staff in the specialist Animal Care unit at Plumpton College.

English Language Lessons

Students share English lessons with students on Bucksmore Summer. During some periods of the week, students are separated from the main group to take part in their chosen specialism. Lessons are taught through a combination of general English tuition, project sessions, academic English, conversation classes and excursion link lessons.

Plumpton College is an agricultural college during the academic year, with a sprawling site of 900 hectares, including horse riding stables, tennis courts, sports fields, vineyards, a sports hall, an animal care centre and a forest, it has a wide range of opportunities for sports and activities and in a safe and secure setting.

Plumpton College is located at the foot of the South Downs in a quiet village. It is only 20 minutes away from the seaside town of Brighton.

Plumpton College provides both single and twin bedrooms in separate male and female accommodation blocks, and all bathrooms are shared between 4-6 students. Please note that there is a very limited number of twin bedrooms, hence it is not possible to accommodate requests on this occasion. Laundry is available onsite and free of charge. Bucksmore also offers a complimentary airport transfer service to students arriving at Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Plumpton College is an agricultural school dating back to 1919. During the Second World War, Plumpton was used to train recruits to the Women’s Land Army, before being sent to farms throughout the country. As a result, the College received a large amount of investment after the end of the war, in order to expand and improve its accommodation and facilities. In the last ten years, Plumpton College has once again expanded significantly, building an animal care centre, winery, workshop facilities, library and extensions and renovations to the main building and accommodation blocks.

Course Aims

This course will help students to build language skills and confidence gradually through our multi-level syllabus and introduce students to veterinary science.

Link Lessons

To provide students with an even greater holistic language learning experience, we provide lessons specifically linked to the destinations they visit on their excursions.

Project sessions enable students to use English for the completion of real-world tasks with an authentic purpose. Students receive vocabulary and grammar input in the first part of the project session and are then placed into groups. Groups are provided with a project guideline which they should follow and aim to complete in the preparation session. The weekly project culminates in a presentation evening in which groups display and present their work.

Taken at the end of the course, the assessment is designed to complement the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) and to provide learners with a realistic determination of their English ability. It can be applied against other international English exams such as Cambridge ESOL & IELTS. Students will leave the course with a certificate of recommended English level measured against the CEFR scale. Organised by a dedicated Activity Manager, each week students will have two full days and one half-day excursion to destinations across the UK, plus an on-site activity program.

Activities & Excursions

Hever Castle, Central London Walking Tour & London Dungeons, Thorpe Park, Drum Workshop, Team Sports Tournament, Scavenger Hunt

Every Bucksmore location has a residential management team, and a minimum staff-student ratio of 1:7. There is always a trained first aider on-site, and students are supervised 24 hours a day.

Camps offers a complimentary airport transfer service on transfer days for flights arriving/departing between 10:00 and 20:00. We can also provide an Unaccompanied Minor service for pick-up and drop-off. Students are looked after from when they land to when their flight departs.

Each location has a Centre Manager, Activity Manager and Director of Studies available for all students to approach with any problems. Counsellors are more than just teachers; they provide a high level of care and guidance for all students. All staff are background checked.

High staff to student ratios ensure all students are looked after. The summer schools strive to create a warm and welcoming “family atmosphere” where all students and Counsellors know each other well.
