**THIS IS WALL STREET ** Whether you are interested in trading, wealth management, venture capital, hedge funds, private equity, cryptocurrency/blockchain or understanding financial statements, you will find the New York Institute of Finance (NYIF) instructors passionate about what they do and eager to share their industry knowledge with you – the next generation of finance industry professionals. NYIF and Westcoast Connection Teen Summer Programs have collaborated in New York City to provide you with an unparalleled financial educational experience for high school students. You will learn the ins and outs of the financial sector and be inspired by top industry professionals through engaging sessions, collaborative projects and all of the excitement of New York City. Every participant will leave NY with life long friendships, fond memories and practical insights and knowledge of the career choices available in finance.

Finance Curriculum

**Details: **Facilitated by instructors with decades of experience on Wall Street, this 2-week immersive program equips high school students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a degree in business or finance.  Students will be introduced to the complex world of finance, providing an invaluable foundation in business and capital markets. Gain hands-on skills and life-long connections through group projects and weekly competitions.  Program topics include:

  • What is Wall Street?
  • Developing a “Financial Quotient (FQ)”
  • Introduction to the Global Financial System
  • Private Equity & Venture Capital
  • Commercial Banking and Credit
  • Ethics in Business and Finance
  • Sustainable Finance and ESG and Impact Investing
  • Exploring Internships & Job Search Strategies in the Financial Industry
  • Fintech and Digital Assets (Cryptocurrency/Blockchain)

  • Career Paths in the Financial Industry There will be one group project competition each week that will be judged by a panel of industry experts. Week 1 – Sustainable Business Development & Funding Competition

Students will be grouped into small teams and meet with NYIF mentors to create a "pitch" presentation to raise money from a Venture Capital Fund. Each team will:

  • Generate ideas for a sustainable business.
  • Formulate a business plan highlighting sustainable business practices.
  • Present to an expert panel to access funding needs for your business.  Week 2 – Fund Manager Competition After learning the guidelines and best practices for researching and evaluating a stock from a professional portfolio manager, students will be grouped into small teams and will assume the role of equity analysts researching and selecting stocks to develop a winning portfolio. Each team will:
  • Pre-screen around 10 companies’ stocks.
  • Evaluate each company in detail.
  • Develop a portfolio of up to 3 stocks.
  • Present findings and recommendations as a portfolio pitch to NYIF experts and the group.

With a history dating back almost 100 years, the New York Institute of Finance (NYIF) is a global leader in training for financial services and related industries. NYIF courses cover everything from investment banking, asset pricing, insurance and market structure to financial modeling, treasury operations, and accounting. The New York Institute of Finance has a faculty of industry leaders and offers a range of program delivery options, including self-study, online courses, and in-person classes. NYIF Faculty Learn from senior Wall Street financial experts and business leaders. NYIF Academic Director - Jack Farmer Jack specializes in training and consulting solutions for portfolio risk management, FX and interest rate derivatives and trading, equity index and volatility trading, equity derivatives and structured equity products, financial statement analysis and hedge accounting. Jack also acts as an outside adviser for portfolio managers at significant global investment funds. These funds include emerging markets equity funds and global macro hedge funds.  Prior to his current consulting work, Jack worked as a senior consultant in Accenture's Financial Services Industry group. He then joined a proprietary trading group at Bank of America as a trader, eventually becoming the head trader and chief strategist for its FX and Eurodollar Statistical Arbitrage group. After completing his doctoral studies in finance, he spent two years teaching quantitative finance at the University of Texas at Austin. With the objective of putting his dissertation research to practical use, he moved to New York in 1997 and began working as a quantitative trading and training consultant with proprietary trading groups in New York, London, and Chicago.

Career Insights and Preparation:

As part of this program’s curriculum, each week includes a session dedicated specifically to providing students with tips and insights that will help them reach their career goals. Week 1: Jobs, Internships, & Recruitment Insights Participate in a moderated panel discussion with an HR representative from a large organization, covering the following topics:

  • Hard and Soft Skills company recruiters seek
  • Top Interview Techniques
  • Group Exercise: Integrating Empathy, Collaboration, and Communication Skills
  • Personal Branding, LinkedIn, and Social Media Considerations Week 2: Career Paths in Finance Industry Led by NYIF instructors, this session’s lecture will cover the following topics:
  • An overview of all financial industry related professions
  • Skills and knowledge requirements for the main types of finance jobs
  • Academic preparation vs. experience buildup
  • Case study: Take a look at the several famous leader’s career paths starting as financial professionals

SoHo A bustling neighborhood of Lower Manhattan with art galleries, exclusive boutiques, chic hotels, and stylish restaurants, SoHo is a hub for retail therapy, with a variety of luxury trademark clothing, designers, and trendy bars and restaurants. Brooklyn The second largest city in the United States, Brooklyn is home to many of New York’s top attractions including The Brooklyn Bridge, Botanic Garden in Prospect Park, Flea market, Historical Society, and Coney Island. Little Italy Manhattan’s Little Italy is a haven for family, tradition, community, celebration along with culinary pleasures.

Flight to New York ** **As a participant on our Wall Street program, you may fly to New York City and be greeted upon arrival and enjoy complimentary transfer (for flights in designated times) from the airport to our hotel. For those requiring, we are happy to assist you with arranging flights to and from the program. If you prefer, you may be dropped off directly at our hotel and meet your staff there. Return Flight Home from New York ** **For your return from New York for flights in designated times, we provide airport transfer and our leaders help you to check in and remain in the airport until flights have departed. Age Requirement ** **Students must be age 15 or older by the start of this program. Food & Meals ** **A big part of your summer program’s success depends on how well you eat. We are proud of the fact that year after year we are complimented for our quality, quantity and choice of food! Enjoy a delicious breakfast with a healthy variety of hot and cold choices. For lunch, you enjoy the choice of eating in smaller groups and choosing from local cafés and small restaurants. For dinner, either the whole group goes to the same restaurant or we divide into smaller groups to sample quainter places with a variety of cuisines. Food options are varied and plentiful. We have satisfied the choosiest of eaters and gladly accommodate most special dietary requests including vegetarian, anaphylactic food allergies, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, and kosher style. We welcome discussing your individual requirements with you and have extensive experience in this area. Laundry ** **You will only need one week’s worth of clothing as outlined in the packing list that will be sent to you prior to departure. You will have the opportunity to do laundry at your convenience by either dropping off your laundry at a local wash and fold service and then pick it up clean, folded and ready to go.
