Set in the mountains above Bakersfield, California, this traditional American summer camp offers children a unique opportunity to step away from technology and experience life in a close-knit, outdoor community.
The program combines outdoor adventure, ranch life, creativity, personal responsibility, and plenty of fun. Campers help grow food, care for animals, take part in sports and creative activities, and contribute to everyday community life. With a small community of around 80 campers, the experience encourages children to become more independent, confident, responsible, and comfortable trying new things.
Rather than following a fixed academic curriculum, campers are encouraged to make choices, explore their interests, take appropriate challenges, and learn through real-life experiences.
The camp is located in a peaceful mountain setting above Bakersfield, California, surrounded by nature and away from busy city life.
The working-ranch environment gives campers the opportunity to experience a simpler lifestyle while spending much of their day outdoors. Activities take place around the ranch, lake, activity areas, gardens, animal areas, and surrounding natural environment.
The main residential program is suitable for ages 6–15, with a separate leadership experience available for older teenagers.
This is an experiential summer camp rather than a classroom-based academic program.
Learning takes place naturally through outdoor activities, ranch responsibilities, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and independent decision-making.
Campers choose activities several times throughout the day, normally from a selection of around 10–12 options. This flexible structure allows children to follow their interests while also encouraging them to explore unfamiliar activities and develop new skills.
Daily responsibilities may include:
Caring for animals
Helping in the garden
Collecting eggs
Setting tables
Helping with meals
Maintaining shared spaces
Helping with simple ranch projects
Older campers may also participate in supervised work projects such as building, repairing fences, or cutting wood.
Camp days are active and structured without feeling overly scheduled.
A typical day may include:
6:45 AM – Wake-up for morning responsibilities
7:00 AM – Early morning jobs
7:30 AM – General wake-up and preparation
7:50 AM – Breakfast
9:30 AM – Morning activities
12:15 PM – Lunch
1:40 PM – Quiet rest period
2:50 PM – Afternoon activities
5:00 PM – Shower time on scheduled days
6:15 PM – Dinner
7:40 PM – Evening activities
8:20 PM – Community evening gathering
9:00 PM – Lights out
The daily rest period gives campers time to sleep, read, write, draw, or simply relax before afternoon activities begin.
Accommodation follows a traditional outdoor summer camp style.
Campers sleep on cots with sleeping bags in open-sided sleeping structures, allowing them to remain close to nature throughout their stay.
Campers are generally grouped with others of a similar age. Private changing areas are available for those who prefer additional privacy.
The camp follows a simple and environmentally conscious lifestyle, including solar-powered showers and outdoor-style restroom facilities.
There is no Wi-Fi or air conditioning, and the program is intentionally technology-free.
Campers receive three freshly prepared meals each day.
Meals are cooked from scratch using indoor and outdoor kitchens and are enjoyed together in a family-style setting.
Food plays an important part in the overall camp experience. Campers may help grow vegetables and herbs, collect eggs, prepare ingredients, set tables, serve food, and assist with clean-up.
Meals are designed to be:
Wholesome
Varied
Child-friendly
Suitable for active days
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and other dietary requirements can generally be accommodated when communicated in advance.
Additional snacks are available when needed, and campers are encouraged to stay well-fed and hydrated throughout their active days.

Daily activity program
Horseback riding and outdoor activities
Ranch experiences
Creative activities

Daily camp responsibilities
There is no camp store or paid activity upgrade system, helping create a shared experience where campers participate on an equal basis.
Families are responsible for personal clothing, sleeping equipment, toiletries, and other items listed on the program packing list.
Certain campers with specific food allergies or dietary requirements may also be asked to bring suitable specialist food products.
The program is focused primarily on nature, ranch life, and outdoor adventure rather than traditional city sightseeing.
Campers spend their time exploring the natural environment and participating in activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, climbing, fishing, and outdoor challenges.
A separate leadership program for older teenagers may include additional adventures such as a multi-day backpacking experience and guided river rafting.
Families normally drive campers directly to the camp for arrival and collection.
There is no regular scheduled airport transfer service.
For families travelling internationally or from another state who cannot drive to the camp, transportation arrangements may be discussed individually with the camp team.
Arrival is normally scheduled on Sunday morning between approximately 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM.
Upon arrival, staff welcome campers, help with luggage and sleeping-area assignments, and introduce them to counselors and other campers.
This is primarily a personal-development and experiential summer camp rather than an academic certificate program.
Formal academic certificates or qualifications are not a central part of the experience.
Instead, campers are regularly recognized for qualities such as:
Courage
Kindness
Effort
Personal improvement
Responsibility
Helping others
Trying something new
The emphasis is on developing confidence, independence, character, practical skills, friendships, and memorable life experiences rather than grades or formal academic awards.
