Program Highlights

  • Learn the most practical programming techniques used by Google and Facebook - Raspberry Pi and Python.

  • Create a machine integrated mini project and apply math and physics concepts to interactive programming activities.

  • Boost your video game career by using Python to create your own 2D platforming game.

  • Start thinking like a technologist and meet programmers and entrepreneurs who are creating the future.

Topics you'll explore

Course Structure:

Hands-On Learning

  • Spend most of the first week learning block-based Java programming for Android and iOS operating systems. The exercises and tutorials quickly help students build capacity with coding, abstraction, algorithms and data management within a program. The second week involves active coding in small groups with intense research and collaboration. This approach involves an introduction to Python and Raspberry Pi hardware which will allow students to create a mini-project by using the sensors and LED matrix on the Sense HAT technology.

Career Exploration

  • This module will dive deeper into newsworthy advances in technology and give high school students a first-hand look at related questions and issues. We will discuss the wide variety of professions within the field of technology such as UX / UI design, programming, project management, and quality assurance. You'll get a deeper sense of your unique motivations and aptitudes and how that aligns with potential academic and career choices. This helps students make better informed decisions about some of life’s most important choices.

Students may visit Stantec, one of the world’s top-tier design engineering firms. At Mission Bay, Stantec is helping the University of California, San Francisco transform cancer care. In Golden Gate Park, they partnered to design the California Academy of Sciences, one of the world’s greenest museums.

Activities & Trips

Since we are based in Berkeley, San Francisco and Silicon Valley are also at our doorstep. We will explore the world-class resources of the entire region to expose you to one of the most innovative and exciting areas in the entire world. Additionally, we’ll enjoy the fun attractions in the vicinity. All excursions are fully supervised by Summer Springboard staff.

Berkeley, California

  • As is true in most college towns, UC Berkeley is the community's arts and culture center. During your free time, you'll have time to explore the area around downtown Berkeley. Enjoy locally-sourced inspiration wherever you turn: scenic parks, famous stages, and renowned restaurants.

San Francisco & Golden Gate Bridge

  • What better way to explore a city than a scavenger hunt around San Francisco. As students travel through the city, they are tasked to take photos and some famous landmarks: Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square, Ghirardelli Square, and a cable car!

Track-Specific Excursions

  • In order to take full advantage of everything the Bay Area offers, each academic program may also take subject matter specific excursions to help round out the student experience. Previous visits have included: Google, Facebook, Bloomberg TV, San Francisco Chronicle, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, and more.

California's Great America

  • California's Great America is a 100-acre amusement park located in Santa Clara. The park has appeared in 1994 films Beverly Hills Cop III and Getting Even with Dad. One of its most notable attractions, Gold Striker, has been featured as a top-ranked wooden roller coaster in Amusement Today's annual Golden Ticket Awards publication.
