Course Description

Mock Trial Experience

In this interactive course, students will delve into the exciting world of mock trials, exploring the key components of trial practice. Participants will prepare and present arguments on hypothetical legal cases, contemplating the moral and ethical considerations of complex historical case studies. Through this process, students will practice critical thinking and analysis, applying these skills to their mock trials.

  • Trial Roles and Perspectives: Examine the different viewpoints of various players in a trial, including attorneys, defendants, witnesses, judges, and jurors. Students will alternate roles between prosecution and defense across two presented cases.

  • Developing Trial Components: In groups, students will craft opening statements, witness statements, examinations, cross-examinations, and closing statements. The course culminates in a final decision by the jury and judge.

  • Persuasive Techniques: Learn tips and techniques for crafting persuasive opening statements, conducting cross-examinations, and delivering compelling closing arguments, all while honing speaking and debate skills.

Admission Criteria

Prospective students should view the eligibility requirements for the Institute for the Gifted. Completion of the Summer Institute application is required.

🛂 Visa Requirements for International Students

🌎 Students NOT in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program

If your home country is not one of the 40 countries in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, you will need a B-2 Visitor Visa to attend the program.

The B-2 visa is for tourism and short-term study (under 16–18 hours of classes per week).

After enrollment, you will receive a Letter of Introduction to help support your visa application.

  • For international students, the international registration fee is $379 (residential) OR $239 (commuter) – this fee covers a medical policy for the student and their airport transfers.
