Through live, interactive tutorials (not pre-recorded), you will explore history from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance, analyse global cultural developments, and present your own historical research. Guided by expert tutors from leading universities, you will master the Socratic method of questioning, investigate Enlightenment philosophy, and understand the forces that govern our global order.

Course Content & Learning Objectives

1. Ancient Civilisations (I)

• Get to know your international cohort and tutor, establish course norms, and discuss the overall relevance of studying world history and philosophy.

• Core Concepts: Explore the key characteristics of ancient civilisations and create a visual timeline showcasing major cultural events.

2. Ancient Civilisations (II)

• Analyse the profound impact of ancient Indian and Chinese civilisations on global history.

• Cultural Development: Explore how these Eastern philosophies and societal structures influenced long-term cultural development across the globe.

3. The Ancient Greeks

• Investigate the lasting impact of ancient Greek philosophy on modern thought and the scientific method.

• Democracy: Explore the foundational democratic principles established in Greece and how they continue to shape political systems today.

4. The Middle Ages

• Explore key events from the Middle Ages, including the Crusades, the Black Death, and the Norman Conquest.

• Philosophy: Analyse the impact of medieval philosophy and scholasticism on the evolution of modern intellectual traditions.

5. The Renaissance

• Present a comprehensive overview of the Renaissance, highlighting its artistic and scientific influence across Europe.

• Intellectual Shift: Analyse how the Humanist movement during this period transformed modern-day thought and culture.

6. The Enlightenment

• Explore the revolutionary philosophical ideas of Enlightenment thinkers such as Immanuel Kant, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Voltaire.

9. Modern Philosophy

• Evaluate the relevance of modern philosophical ideas—such as Existentialism and Ethics—in contemporary society.

• Contemporary Thought: Discuss how historical philosophical frameworks can be applied to solve real-world problems in the 21st century.

10. Project Presentations & Conclusion

• Deliver your final research project presentation to your peers and tutor, integrating the historical and philosophical concepts learned.

Meet Your Tutor 👩‍🏫

Alice Spiers BA, MSt (Oxon), DPhil (Oxon)

Alice holds a Doctor of Philosophy in History from St Anne's College, University of Oxford, where she was awarded a Graduate Development Scholarship. She has also completed a Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of York and a Master of Studies in Medieval History at the University of Oxford. Alice currently works as a university lecturer in History at St Anne's College, specialising in medieval world history and regularly teaching across other Oxford colleges.
