1. Orientation & Business Objectives

• Get to know your international cohort and tutor, share your personal journey, and understand what to expect from the curriculum.

• Fundamentals: Explore why businesses exist, the motivations of entrepreneurs, and examine different business objectives and the conflicts that can arise from competing goals.

2. The Economic Climate

• Explain how external factors, such as incomes and input costs, influence business operations.

• Resilience: Apply this knowledge to case studies to evaluate how businesses respond to external shocks and develop effective resilience strategies.

3. Branding & Marketing

• Articulate the importance of branding and marketing, exploring core concepts like the 5Cs (Customer, Company, Context, Competitors, and Collaborators).

• Disruptive Marketing: Assess the impact of different marketing campaigns and apply key terms like segmentation, targeting, and positioning to real-world scenarios.

4. The Cost of Business

• Define key concepts related to the fast fashion industry and evaluate the costs and benefits for stakeholders, shareholders, and consumers.

• Responsibility: Consider the impact of social and environmental factors on business and how governments can encourage responsible corporate behaviour.

5. Management and Leadership

• Explain the fundamental differences between a leader and a manager, identifying and evaluating various leadership styles.

• Strategic Planning: Understand why effective planning and decision-making mechanisms are essential for a business's long-term success.

6. Business Plans

• Explain why planning is critical for businesses while acknowledging the inherent constraints of the planning process.

• Analysis: Identify the main components of a professional business plan and conduct a basic analysis of a plan through the eyes of a potential investor.

7. The Art of the Pitch

• Appreciate the role of pitching in the life of an entrepreneur and identify the key factors that make a pitch successful.

• Honing Skills: Study elevator pitch techniques and practise your own pitching skills through interactive sessions.

8. Time Value of Money and Investment

• Understand the meaning of the "Time Value of Money" and the relevance of this concept to modern investors.

• Financial Maths: Learn to differentiate between present and future value, and calculate interest using simple and compound formulas.

9. The Future of Business

• Identify and analyse emerging trends and technologies, including business in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

• Implications: Understand the legal, ethical, and social implications of AI and explore the potential future careers that may emerge as a result.

10. Business Plan Evaluation & Conclusion

• Put your knowledge to the final test by presenting your original business plan and receiving detailed feedback from your tutor and peers.

• Reflections: Reflect on your learning journey and the business skills you have developed throughout the course.

Dr Jaskiran Kaur Bhogal BSc, MSc, MSc, MRes, FHEA, PhD

Jaskiran studied Anthropology at the London School of Economics and was awarded the prestigious Alfred Gell Scholarship for her doctorate. She also holds an undergraduate degree in Economics and is currently developing her own business. Jaskiran works with the Sikh Education Council and has been recognised for her excellence in teaching, including being named Class Teacher of the Year.
