Families can feel confident in a trusted organisation known for high teaching standards, small class sizes (maximum 15 students), and a supportive digital community.
Fascinated by biology and the natural world? The Online Biology & Life Sciences Academy offers the perfect opportunity to explore advanced concepts in the study of life from anywhere in the world.
Through live, interactive tutorials (not pre-recorded), you will explore the complexities of ecology, evolution, and genetics, and examine how biotechnology is shaping our future. Guided by expert tutors from leading universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, you will conduct your own research project, debate ethical dilemmas, and master the scientific methods used by professional biologists.
Understand the fundamentals of biology, including the basic principles and concepts that form the foundation of the field.
The Scientific Method: Explore the importance of experimentation, from formulating hypotheses and designing experiments to analysing data and drawing conclusions.
History of Biology: Review the contributions of key scientists such as Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel, and Louis Pasteur.
Research Project: Receive your brief for the hands-on research project and presentation to be delivered in the final class.
Investigate the structure and function of cells, including the roles of specific organelles.
Explore how cells maintain homeostasis—regulating temperature, pH levels, and nutrient balance—and distinguish between prokaryotic, eukaryotic, and specialised cells.
Understand the structure and function of DNA, including the double helix and base pairing rules.
Identify the role of genes in determining traits and susceptibility to disease, alongside the mechanisms of Mendelian inheritance.
Explore the theory of evolution, the concept of common descent, and the mechanisms of natural selection, mutation, and genetic drift.
Analyse the evidence for evolution through the fossil record, comparative anatomy, and molecular genetics.
Study the interactions between organisms and their environment, including symbiosis, predation, and competition.
Examine the levels of organisation from populations to ecosystems, and the flow of energy and nutrients through biogeochemical cycles.
Discover the diversity of life on Earth and the hierarchical system of taxonomy used to classify organisms.
Discuss the major threats to biodiversity—such as habitat loss and climate change—and the role of sustainable practices in conservation.
Examine the structure and function of major organ systems, including the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems.
Discuss how these systems maintain health and homeostasis, and the impact of genetics and lifestyle factors on human health.
Study microorganisms—including bacteria, viruses, and fungi—and their critical roles in both the environment and human health.
Discuss the importance of antibiotics and the rise of antibiotic resistance caused by misuse and overuse.
Learn how biological processes are used to produce pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and genetically modified organisms.
Ethics: Debate the ethical considerations of genetic engineering and DNA fingerprinting, including the need for informed consent and regulation.
Presentations: Present your final research projects and receive constructive feedback from your tutor and peers.
Review & Careers: Review key course concepts, participate in a final Q&A, and explore future career pathways and degree options in the biological sciences.
