STEM AT SAMIAD
Innovation, Creativity, and Problem-Solving in Action
At Samiad, STEM isn’t about memorising equations or reading from a textbook.
It’s about practical challenges that place students in the roles of scientists, engineers,
and innovators.
Through our interactive, story-driven missions, students face real-world survival scenarios:
how to build habitats, generate energy, and keep a team alive. Every task is designed to
spark imagination while developing real-world STEM and communication skills.
THE MISSION FRAMEWORK
Across two weeks, students tackle a sequence of STEM survival challenges, all tied to
the team’s success. Each challenge involves:
- Design & Build – hands-on creation of models, prototypes, or experiments.
- Testing – trialling ideas and refining solutions.
- Presentation – pitching to peers and staff in English.
- Competition – colonies compete for limited “resources” to keep their mission alive.
SNAPSHOT LESSON: HABITAT DESIGN CHALLENGE
The Story
A deadly dust storm is approaching. Colonies must design a safe and sustainable
habitat to protect their crew and ensure long-term survival on Mars.
THE ACTIVITY
- Teams sketch and construct prototype shelters using limited materials.
- They calculate resource use (oxygen, food, water) and factor sustainability.
- Each group presents their design to the “Mission Council” (teachers and peers).
- Colonies compete for survival points based on practicality, creativity, and persuasiveness.
WHAT STUDENTS ARE REALLY LEARNING
- Science – forces, materials, energy, sustainability.
- Maths – measurements, resource calculations, problem-solving.
- Engineering – designing, building, and testing prototypes.
- Collaboration – managing roles and working in diverse teams.
- English in Action – pitching ideas, answering questions, persuading an audience.
- Innovation & Resilience – adapting when ideas don’t work first time.
WHY OUR INTERACTIVE LESSONS ARE SO EFFECTIVE
- Hands-On Projects – design, build, and test ideas
- Challenge-Led – rival colonies compete
- Cross-Curricular – engineering, tech, maths, and science
- English Embedded – present and justify in English
The result: problem-solving, innovation, and communication skills
that last beyond the summer.
KEY FACTS
- Specialist STEM tutors with practical teaching experience.
- 15 hours per week of STEM-based sessions linked to
English learning.
- Small teams – encouraging leadership and collaboration.
- Team competitions – projects judged on creativity,
practicality, and communication.
THE END GOAL
By the end of the lesson, students have created a tangible product, explained it in
English, and experienced the thrill of solving problems as a team - with measurable
gains in STEM knowledge and communication confidence.
Parents see real STEM learning in action. Students see themselves as innovators
shaping humanity’s future on Mars.
