Course Description: Architecture & Design Summer School at Imperial College London, UK

The Architecture & Design programme is an immersive, studio-based experience designed for students who want to explore architecture as both an academic discipline and a creative profession. Set in one of the world’s richest architectural environments, the programme invites students to bring their design ideas to life while developing the core skills required for future study in architecture, urban design, or related creative fields.

Highly intensive and hands-on, this course mirrors the learning experience of undergraduate architecture programmes. Students work across both manual and digital media, developing technical drawings, physical and digital models, and a complete design project. Through observation, critique, and collaboration, students gain daily inspiration from their surroundings and learn how architecture responds to people, place, and purpose 🌍.

Who This Programme Is For 🎓

This programme is ideal for students considering a future in architecture or design who want to experience what studying architecture truly involves. It particularly suits students who enjoy creative problem-solving, visual thinking, and working collaboratively in a discussion-led environment where constructive feedback plays a central role.

What Students Will Gain 📐

By the end of the programme, students will:

Develop a strong understanding of the fundamentals of architecture and designBuild observational, technical drawing, and scale-model making skillsGain an overview of architectural history from Ancient Greece to the present day, including contemporary discourse on the built environmentProduce a body of work suitable for inclusion in a university application portfolio 📁Immerse themselves in the world of design through studio work, site observation, and critiqueDevelop essential academic and professional skills such as time management, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication

How Students Learn 🧠

Learning takes place through a blend of small-group seminars, technical skills workshops, case studies, and simulated professional scenarios. Students benefit from close guidance and regular feedback from expert tutors, allowing them to refine their ideas continuously and grow in confidence.

The programme places strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Students actively sketch, draw, design, build, and present their work, experiencing the iterative nature of architectural practice and learning how ideas evolve through critique and revision ✍️.

Core Skills Developed 🌱

Alongside architectural knowledge, students develop vital transferable skills. These include creative and critical thinking, collaboration with international peers 🤝, independent project management, and the confidence to present and defend ideas during critiques and exhibition sessions.

Programme Modules 🧩

Introduction to Architecture

Students begin by exploring what architecture means as both a discipline and a profession. Key architectural concepts are introduced, including form, function, context, and site-specific design, helping students understand how buildings respond to their environment.

Design Project

At the heart of the programme, students complete a tutor-led design project based on a specific brief. They learn how to analyse and respond to a brief, plan a project, develop a proposal, and consider client needs. The project culminates in a final critique and exhibition of work, simulating professional architectural practice 🏗️.

Technical Drawing Skills

Students learn the foundations of architectural drawing, including plans, sections, elevations, and one-point and two-point perspectives. These technical skills are applied throughout the programme and play a key role in the final design project.

Site Surveys & Observational Drawings

This module focuses on understanding and analysing a site. Students conduct site surveys, research locations for their design proposals, and take part in walking tours and drawing workshops, producing observational sketches of real buildings and spaces.

History & Theory

Students explore architectural history from Classical and Gothic architecture through to Modernist and Postmodernist movements. The module also examines emerging trends such as biophilic and green architecture, with particular focus on sustainability and environmentally responsible design 🌱.

Collage – Digital & Print

Students experiment with collage as a creative design tool, combining drawing, photography, and found materials. This module encourages exploration of ideas and alternative design approaches, which can be incorporated into the main project.

Compiling a Portfolio

Students learn how to structure and present a strong architecture portfolio, understanding the importance of process, development, and variety of skills. Exemplary portfolios are reviewed to guide students in preparing work for future university applications.

Model Construction

This module introduces physical and digital model-making as a way to visualise architectural ideas. Students explore different modelling techniques, learning how to think structurally and spatially through concept models and maquettes 🧱.

City of the Future Design Challenge

In the final stage of the programme, students collaborate on a forward-looking urban design project. They apply principles of sustainability to design a waste-free, pollution-free city of 2050, bringing together everything learned throughout the course while exploring circular economy and future-focused urban solutions 🌆.
