Course Description: Engineering: Civil, Mechanical & Electrical - Summer School at Yale University, USA

The Engineering: Civil, Mechanical & Electrical programme at Yale University offers ambitious students a rigorous and inspiring introduction to the core disciplines that underpin modern engineering and technological innovation. Set within one of the world’s most respected academic environments, this programme provides students with a broad yet structured understanding of how engineering principles are applied to solve real-world problems.

Designed for students considering future study in engineering, physics, technology, or applied sciences, the programme combines theoretical foundations with practical application. Students explore how engineers design systems, analyse forces and energy, and develop solutions that shape infrastructure, machines, and electrical technologies used across industries worldwide 🌍.

***

A University-Style Engineering Experience *

Teaching follows a university-style approach, encouraging students to think analytically, apply mathematical and scientific reasoning, and engage actively in problem-solving. Rather than focusing on a single branch of engineering, the programme offers exposure to civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, helping students understand how these disciplines intersect in modern engineering projects.

Students are guided to approach challenges methodically — defining problems, testing ideas, and evaluating outcomes — developing the mindset expected of future engineers.

***

Who This Programme Is For *

This programme is ideal for students aged 16–18 who:

Are interested in engineering, technology, or applied sciences Enjoy mathematics, physics, and logical problem-solving Are considering studying engineering or related subjects at university Want early exposure to different engineering pathways before specialising

No prior specialist engineering experience is required, but curiosity, motivation, and a strong interest in STEM subjects are essential.

***

What Students Will Gain *

By the end of the programme, students will:

Understand the fundamental principles underlying civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering Develop problem-solving skills through analytical and practical challenges Apply mathematical and scientific concepts to engineering scenarios Gain insight into how engineers design, test, and optimise systems Explore real-world engineering applications across infrastructure, machinery, and electrical systems Build confidence in presenting technical ideas clearly and logically

Students also develop transferable skills valued across STEM careers, including critical thinking, teamwork, and structured reasoning.

***

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to the USA? 🇺🇸✈️

Students attending our USA Summer Courses may be eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), depending on their nationality.

Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

Many international students can enter the USA without a visa for short stays by applying for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before travel. This allows travel to the USA for educational programmes lasting up to 90 days.

When Is a Visa Required?

Some nationalities are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and will need to apply for a visitor visa to attend the programme. Visa requirements depend on:

  • Nationality

  • Passport type

  • Individual travel history

Support With Your Application

We understand that visa processes can feel complex. Individual guidance and support are available on request for families whose students require a visa, including:

  • Advice on the correct visa category

  • Supporting documentation where required

  • Guidance on next steps and timelines

We recommend checking visa and ESTA eligibility as early as possible to allow plenty of time before travel.
