Course Description: NEW: Economics for High School Students at University of Oxford Campus

Economics – Oxford

Explore how economies work, why markets behave the way they do, and what shapes global decisions — all in the academic setting of Oxford. 🌍📈

***

Location: Oxford, United Kingdom 📍

Students study in central Oxford, a city known globally for its long tradition of scholarship and debate. With historic colleges, libraries, and museums surrounding them, students learn in an inspiring environment built for academic curiosity and exploration.

***

Academics 📚

This programme is designed for engaged 16–17-year-olds who want to understand how both micro and macro economies function. Students explore markets, competition, business performance, global trade, government policies, inequality, sustainability, and the broader forces shaping society. Tutors adapt lessons to the group’s interests, ensuring discussions stay relevant and engaging.

The teaching approach mirrors Oxford’s traditional tutorial model. Students work in small seminar groups of no more than eight and complete two independent assignments (either essays or problem sheets). These are later discussed in 1:1 or 2:1 tutorials, where tutors guide their thinking and help them develop strong analytical reasoning. Students also benefit from seminar discussions, Q&A sessions, guest speakers, college visits, an academic skills masterclass, and a university fair.

***

Certificates and Tutor Feedback 🎓✨

Every student receives a certificate of achievement, detailed written tutor feedback outlining their progress, and a personalised Letter of Recommendation to support future academic or programme applications.

***

Life at Somerville College 🏛️

Students stay in comfortable single bedrooms arranged around a calm, green central quadrangle. Bathrooms are shared among a small number of students, and bed linen and towels are provided. While kitchens are not accessible, all meals are arranged through the programme. Shared lounges, outdoor spaces, laundry facilities, and the historic dining hall create a supportive environment for students preparing for university life.

***

Meals and Catering 🍽️

Meals are offered on a half-board basis. Breakfast and dinner are provided daily in the college dining hall or at selected restaurants. Students purchase their own lunch. All dietary needs can be accommodated.

***

Tutors 👨‍🏫

Students learn from experienced educators and professionals:

Alawi M. – Over 10 years of experience in finance and management.

Eric S. – Oxford MBA graduate with government advisory experience in climate and international policy.

Tony M. – Head of Business and Economics at a leading school, specialising in economic development.

***

Excursions 🗺️

Students take part in enriching visits across the UK, including:

• British Museum

• Warwick Castle

• Tower of London

• Westminster and central London landmarks

• Bath and the Roman Baths

• Blenheim Palace

• Ashmolean Museum

• Oxford’s historic colleges and libraries

• Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

• Bristol’s science and culture attractions

These trips help students expand their understanding of history, culture, and global systems.

***

Airport Transfers ✈️

Transfers from London Heathrow (LHR) are included. Staff welcome students at designated airport points from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and accompany them to their transport. Families are encouraged to book arrivals before 3:00 PM so students can join the last transfer at 4:00 PM. Assistance is provided in case of delays or changes.
