Course Description

Summer Springboard’s Business & Entrepreneurship course on the campus of Yale introduces aspiring entrepreneurs to the world of business and the areas that affect growing a business. Our course explores the aspects involved in starting, owning, and operating a business – from thinking through ideas, planning a business, and managing various considerations for growing a small business into an enterprise. Topics such as entrepreneurship, idea generation, customer relationships and revenue streams, personnel and human resource management, product design, cost accounting, financial analysis, marketing, and more will all be explored. Throughout the course, students will work in groups to generate a business idea of their own, and then follow the entrepreneurial process to develop the idea into a feasible prospective business startup. Ultimately, students will pitch their innovative ideas to a panel of business and entrepreneurship “judges” in a Shark-Tank type experience.

Activities & Trips

Top: Since we are based in the heart of New England with access to the premier facilities offered by Yale University, this program will combine time in the classroom with visits around the New Haven area. Students will have the chance to experience interesting tourist and academic-related locations to help broaden their experience and expose them to one of the most exciting areas of the East Coast. Additionally, we’ll enjoy the fun attractions in the vicinity. All excursions are fully supervised by Summer Springboard staff.

New York City

  • Students will venture into New York City for a day to explore the must-see sights of this thriving metropolis including Central Park, Top of the Rock, and Grand Central Station. There will also be some time for souvenir shopping.

New Haven, Connecticut

  • While best known for Yale University, the city of New Haven has a bustling pedestrian life too with its numerous shops, cafes and top-rated restaurants. Some favorite restaurants are Yorkside Restaurant, Ashley's Ice Cream, and Shake Shack. There are also world-class museums available to students, such as the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art.

Six Flags New England

  • Six Flags New England has over 100 rides, shows, attractions and is home to New England’s largest water park, Hurricane Harbor.

Track-Specific Excursions

  • In order to take full advantage of everything New England offers, each academic program may take their students on related trips. The goal of these trips is to augment their study and exposure to a particular subject area. Previous visits have included: Yale New Haven Emergency Department, Supreme Court, Henry C. Lee Institute, Boost Oxygen, and more.

Activities

Just like a college student at Yale, students share a dorm room with roommates and use a common bathroom. Floors are gender-segregated and rooms contain an extra-long twin size bed, desks, drawers, and a closet. Due to the historic nature of the campus, residential colleges are not air-conditioned.

Even though you’re away from home, your Resident Advisor (RA) lives just down the hall and is there for anything you might need, and to ensure your safety and security. In addition, RAs create a community, provide support, plan activities and help you get the most out of your stay at Yale. Other members of the Summer Springboard staff also live on campus and are available to support students and tackle emergencies, 24 hours a day.

Meals

Meals will be eaten at the dining hall, walking distance from the dormitory where we live. Students may also take a short walk to dozens of restaurants and dining options in the New Haven neighborhood.

Pocket Money

You may want to think about bringing some extra cash with you to Summer Springboard. We will be touring the local area and eating a few meals (maybe lunch, dinner on the weekends out). While you tuition covers the cost of the excursion, it will not cover any souvenirs you may want to pick up for family and friends. We suggest an extra $100.
