Exceptional Pre-College International Relations Program for High Schoolers at Cambridge University

For a better future

Lecture _ guest speaker

Course Description

International relations is an academic discipline that focuses on the study of the interaction of the actors in international politics, including states and non-state actors. The study of IR raises questions such as: What powers does the United Nations actually have? What influence does the security council have over the rest of the world? Which treaties and trade agreements have shaped relationships between countries who only decades ago were at war? You will explore these questions and global issues, group discussions, and others like them over two weeks of dynamic tutorials.

Activities

All participants attending our Cambridge/Oxford programmes will reside in central colleges of Cambridge/Oxford University.

All rooms are single occupancy with shared bathroom facilities, typically at a one bathroom ratio per four participants. Some ensuite facilities are available, with priority given to participants with additional needs.

Where bathroom facilities are shared, participants are accommodated by gender on separate corridors. Where ensuite facilities are provided, corridors may be mixed gender.

The accommodation is used by undergraduate students during term time and is therefore designed to support study, rather than cater to luxury. Many of the buildings are over 500 years old and therefore predate air conditioning quite significantly.

All accommodation is secured with a lock, and your key will be provided during registration. Housekeeping staff also have access to your room to replace towels etc.

*A few weeks before their arrival, all participants will be assigned to a college based on their dates and topic preferences.

Meals

As one of our student, you will experience formal dinner three times during your stay – once per week in Cambridge, as well as in an Oxford University college on the excursion day.

Formal hall is truly a memorable occasion, so remember to bring some smart clothes!

Pocket Money

Money we recommend that participants bring £80 per week to cover

lunch each day, plus any souvenirs that they may wish to purchase.

Various banks and ATMs are available throughout Cambridge, and Visa and

Mastercard are widely accepted.

Lesson Plan

The camp is an award-winning academic summer school that offers programs for students aged 16 to 18 in prestigious academic institutions. The goal of this program is to give academically rigorous content that expands participants' knowledge and love for their chosen field. The program also provides young varied and essential views into what it would be like to study at university through 40 hours of academic sessions over the two week. Individual work, referred to as the "Personal Project" in this curriculum, is required. This is usually an essay or a presentation given on the last day of the program. Participants will get comments on their work, which may be included the final assessment of the participant. The International Relations program is aimed to provide learners a better understanding of international relations and what it's like to study it at university. Participants are encouraged to go further into new material and build their own, well-considered thoughts and ideas based on solid study and practical experience. Participants will have a thorough awareness of not just university-level content, but also the diversity of degree programs available in disciplines relevant to international relations by the end of the program.

Example Modules

  • **The Middle East in International Relations: **Home to the world’s three great religions and harbouring massive quantities of oil and gas, the Middle East seems to invite geopolitical attention almost by default. Nowhere else are the failings of economic and political development so closely intertwined in producing international conflict. In this module, you will explore the key international actors in this region.
  • The Role of Ideas in International Relations : As new global priorities have emerged in recent decades, nation states and other global actors have increasingly demonstrated their ‘social’ side in such fields as climate change, international human rights, and international aid. This class explores the role of ideas in IR, an approach that is typically captured by the term “Constructivism”.
  • **The Project of a European Union: **Today, the EU has a total population of more than 500 million people. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the European Union in today’s increasingly globalised world? This module focuses on understanding the internal structure of the EU and assesses its capabilities as a political actor in internal and external affairs.
  • United Nations Simulation: You will be assigned a country to represent at a high-level diplomatic meeting of the UN Security Council and to write a position paper about your country’s foreign policy regarding a topical political scenario. You must then present and defend your country's position on the matter, working to form alliances in accordance with its goals.
