The Faculty of Global Leadership Programme is an academically focused summer course designed for students aged 15–17 who are interested in understanding how leadership operates in a globally connected world. The programme introduces students to the political, economic, and social systems that shape international decision-making, while developing the confidence, communication skills, and strategic thinking required of future leaders.
Rather than studying leadership as an abstract concept, the programme places students in realistic scenarios where they explore global challenges, debate solutions, and practise decision-making with real-world consequences. Through a combination of academic study and experiential learning, students gain insight into how leaders influence global outcomes across government, business, law, public health, and international organisations.
***
Students receive 25 hours of subject-specific academic instruction per week, delivered through interactive seminars, discussions, simulations, and hands-on workshops led by experienced subject tutors. Learning is highly participatory and encourages students to:
Analyse complex global issues from multiple perspectives
Communicate ideas clearly and persuasively
Collaborate with peers from different cultural backgrounds
Apply leadership theory to practical, real-world situations
Develop confidence in decision-making under pressure
English is used consistently throughout the programme, supporting academic communication, discussion, and presentation skills.
***
Students explore how international systems function and how leadership shapes global outcomes. Key areas of study include:
International relations and diplomacy
Global economics and policy-making
Governance structures and reform
The role of ethics, values, and responsibility in leadership
Through guided discussion and case studies, students learn how decisions are formed, negotiated, and implemented on a global scale.
This strand focuses on leadership in action. Students develop:
Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
The ability to prioritise, negotiate, and reach consensus
Confidence leading discussions and group initiatives
Experience making decisions with international consequences
Simulations and leadership exercises allow students to practise these skills in realistic scenarios.
Working with an international cohort, students strengthen their ability to:
Communicate effectively across cultures
Understand differing viewpoints and interests
Collaborate respectfully in diverse teams
Build negotiation and diplomacy skills
This element of the programme reinforces the importance of cultural awareness in global leadership roles.
***
A defining feature of the programme, the Summit Experience runs throughout the two weeks and brings academic learning to life.
Week One – The Global Summit Students take their seats as delegates at a simulated international summit. Each student represents a perspective or sector, presenting policy ideas, recovery strategies, or leadership proposals on urgent global issues. Through debate and discussion, students contribute to collective decision-making within the assembly.
Week Two – The Interdisciplinary Grand Challenge Students collaborate with peers from Business, Medicine, and Law to tackle global problems too complex for a single discipline. Challenges may include climate migration, global health crises, or the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Teams combine expertise to develop integrated solutions.
The experience culminates in the Oxford Global Solutions Forum, where students present their unified proposals as if addressing world leaders at a critical moment.
***
The academic framework mirrors how real leaders articulate vision and policy. Students learn how to:
Identify a global challenge
Develop a clear leadership vision
Propose practical policy solutions
Communicate ideas with authority and credibility
This process helps students understand how leaders inspire trust while outlining realistic steps for change.
***
Every student participates in Time to Shine, a structured public-speaking and presentation project designed to build confidence and leadership presence.
Week One: Students research and draft a leadership manifesto addressing an urgent global issue. They present their ideas in a formal setting, focusing on clarity, structure, and persuasive communication.
Week Two: Students refine their manifesto as part of the interdisciplinary challenge, presenting alongside peers from other faculties. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, diplomacy, and delivering a united message.
The final showcase allows students to demonstrate confidence, conviction, and effective leadership communication before an audience.
***
Students take part in guided fieldwork around Oxford, observing leadership in everyday contexts. Activities include:
Analysing how organisations communicate values
Observing community initiatives and collaboration
Connecting local leadership examples to global themes
These observations reinforce the link between theory, practice, and real-world leadership.
***
No prior experience in leadership, politics, or international relations is required. The programme is accessible to all motivated students, with:
Step-by-step introduction of key concepts and terminology
Continuous guidance from tutors
Emphasis on participation, teamwork, and curiosity
The challenge lies not in prior knowledge, but in engaging confidently with ideas, discussions, and presentations.
***
This programme is ideal for students who:
Are interested in global issues and leadership
Enjoy debate, discussion, and collaborative learning
Want to build confidence in communication and public speaking
Are considering future study or careers in politics, international relations, law, business, or global organisations
Students from all academic backgrounds are welcome.
***
By the end of the programme, students will have:
A strong understanding of global leadership and governance
Improved strategic thinking and decision-making skills
Greater confidence in public speaking and negotiation
Experience working in international and interdisciplinary teams
Enhanced cultural awareness and leadership presence
