The Faculty of Law Programme is an academically rich summer course designed for students aged 15–17 who want to explore how legal systems shape justice, governance, and global society. Set within an Oxford college environment, the programme introduces students to the foundations of law while developing the analytical thinking, argumentation, and communication skills central to legal study and practice.
Rather than learning law as abstract theory, students engage directly with real legal questions. Through case studies, debates, and simulated court proceedings, they explore how laws are created, interpreted, and applied at both national and international levels. The programme provides a strong first step for students considering future study or careers in law, policy, or international affairs.
***
Students receive 25 hours of subject-specific academic instruction per week, delivered through interactive seminars, guided discussions, moot courts, and practical legal workshops led by experienced tutors and legal professionals.
Learning is discussion-led and practice-oriented. Students are encouraged to:
Analyse legal cases and current legal issues
Interpret statutes, evidence, and arguments
Think critically about justice, rights, and responsibility
Communicate persuasively in structured legal settings
Work collaboratively as part of a legal team
English is used consistently throughout the programme to support legal reasoning, debate, and formal presentation.
***
Students develop a strong understanding of how legal systems operate by studying:
Constitutional law and governance
Criminal law and legal responsibility
International law and global legal frameworks
The role of courts in interpreting and enforcing the law
This foundation helps students understand how justice is pursued and maintained within societies.
Through case analysis and debate, students learn how to:
Interpret legal principles and precedents
Analyse evidence and construct arguments
Evaluate competing viewpoints
Apply legal reasoning to complex problems
This builds the analytical mindset essential to legal study.
Practical sessions focus on the skills lawyers use every day, including:
Moot courts and simulated hearings
Legal argumentation and persuasion
Questioning evidence and witnesses
Negotiation and structured debate
These activities develop confidence in public speaking and professional communication.
***
The Summit Experience connects legal study to global decision-making and runs throughout the programme.
Week One – International Legal Debate Students take part in simulated international proceedings, acting as legal advocates and advisers. They explore how international law governs disputes between nations, organisations, and individuals, presenting arguments and responding to legal challenges.
Week Two – The Interdisciplinary Grand Challenge Law students collaborate with peers from Business, Medicine, and Global Leadership to address complex global issues such as pandemics, climate migration, and ethical challenges in technology. Law students contribute legal perspectives, identifying rights, responsibilities, treaties, and regulatory frameworks that shape fair and workable solutions.
The experience culminates in the Oxford Global Solutions Forum, where students present integrated solutions as if addressing world leaders.
***
The academic framework mirrors the structure of an international court case. Students learn how to:
Analyse a legal scenario
Prepare arguments for opposing sides
Apply legal principles and evidence
Present cases before a judging panel
This framework reflects how real courts assess responsibility, fairness, and justice on the global stage.
***
Every student participates in Time to Shine, a structured advocacy and public-speaking project.
Week One: Students prepare and argue an international legal case, working in teams as advocates and advisers. They research the facts, develop arguments, and present their case before a panel acting as judges, who question the reasoning before delivering a verdict.
Week Two: Students refine their advocacy as part of the interdisciplinary challenge, explaining how legal frameworks support ethical and enforceable solutions to global crises.
The final showcase highlights clarity, confidence, and legal reasoning under pressure.
***
Students engage in guided fieldwork around Oxford, exploring how law operates in everyday life. Activities include:
Observing public signs and regulations
Identifying legal rules in shared spaces
Linking local examples to broader legal principles
This reinforces the idea that law is present and active beyond courtrooms.
***
No prior legal knowledge is required. The programme is accessible to students from all academic backgrounds, with:
Step-by-step introduction of legal concepts and terminology
Clear explanations of legal frameworks
Ongoing guidance, feedback, and support from tutors
The emphasis is on participation, curiosity, and developing confidence in legal thinking.
***
This programme is ideal for students who:
Are curious about law, justice, and global affairs
Enjoy debate, discussion, and critical thinking
Want to experience legal study before university
Are considering careers in law, policy, diplomacy, or international organisations
Students exploring law for the first time are very welcome.
***
By the end of the programme, students will have:
A strong understanding of legal systems and principles
Improved analytical and critical thinking skills
Experience in advocacy, negotiation, and legal debate
Confidence presenting arguments in formal settings
Greater clarity about future study and careers in law
